Humane Trapping Instructions
You can borrow a trap from ARI for a refundable deposit of $65. Otherwise, traps are available for purchase at local farm supply stores. Call (717) 993-3232 for more information.
Make sure you have an appointment for spay/neuter for the cat BEFORE you trap her/him.
Put the trap in the area where you’re feeding the cat a day or two before your day to trap. Leave the trap unset so the cat(s) can get used to seeing the trap.
Make sure the trap works before you set it to trap cats. Also, if it’s a trap with a double door, secure the second door with zip or twisty ties.
If you are trapping kittens and a mother cat, trap one or several kittens first if possible, then place them into a carrier from inside your vehicle. Place the kittens in the carrier in the back of the trap. It’s likely that other kittens (and hopefully the mother) will walk inside the trap to investigate.
Set the trap near a fence or shrub (be careful that no shrub limbs get in the way of the trigger). Place a blanket, garbage bag or brush over the trap if the cat seems suspicious. You should also place a large garbage bag over the trap if it is raining. You may also place a small amount of newspaper in the bottom of the trap, being careful to leave the step lever uncovered. Place a small amount of wet cat food on a piece of paper plate in the back of the trap (behind the step lever). Broasted or KFC chicken also works. Dribble a small amount of broth in front of the trap to lure the cat inside.
Only trap during the daytime to avoid trapping other animals, and do not leave the trap unattended for more than 30 minutes at a time. Park your car nearby and bring a good book and a pair of binoculars. Prepare the back of your vehicle (not the trunk!) with towels or newspaper (not plastic, as any urine will roll off of it and into seat or floor).
After the cat is caught in the trap, cover the trap with a towel to reduce the cat’s stress. Remove the trap from the area and place it in the back of your vehicle.
